The street art here in Bogota is something absolutely spectacular. It’s not graffiti, the street art in Bogota is more like works of art. Walking around Bogota it’s really difficult not to notice this street art everywhere. Bogota tends to be a rainy & grey city (most of the time) but the Street Art really helps to brighten up the city. Politics, history, culture, stories, everything you can imagine is illustrated in bright bold colors, to tell their stories and be enjoyed by everyone.
Thanks to a decree signed by Bogotá Mayor Gustavo Petro in 2012, graffiti in Bogota has been decriminalized. Today, street art is prohibited, though it’s not illegal. Works created on private property are permitted with the consent of property owners; elsewhere, graffiti can result in a fine, but not jail time. As a result, there is a lot of outdoor artwork to see in Bogotá—some estimate over 6,000 murals adorn its streets and laneways.
When I first arrived in Bogota me & Rafa spent the day wandering around the downtown neighborhood of la Candelaria. You can see street art all over the city, but in the neighborhood of la Candelaria it is by far the most prominent. This was one of my favorite parts of the city to explore, it’s so full of color and culture. I can’t wait to go back and explore some more (& take more photos).
This street art really is something amazing, if you come to Bogota it should definitely be on your must see list. But I’ll let the pictures speak for themself…
